World Environment Day 2015

To commemorate and celebrate World Environment Day, Otara Foundation invited applications for  grants from animal welfare organizations, environmental agencies and individuals committed to uplifting the wellbeing of animals and preserving our valuable environment.

The two organizations that were awarded the grant were the  Species Conservation Center of Sri Lanka to to enable them to conduct research on elephants feeding in open garbage dumps spread out across the country. The objective being to ensure zero deaths of the elephants who were in danger of consuming plastic bags and other inedible items.  A grant was also awarded to the Wildlife and Nature Protection Society which is spearheading a legal battle to stop deforestation of an area which is home to several herds of elephant.
